What is Acrylic powder?

There are two components needed. You need the acrylic powder which is a polymer,

And you are going to need the monomer, which is the liquid to blend with the acrylic powder. The monomer reacts with the powder to create a strong nail extension that air dries and can last up to three weeks. 

Acrylic powder are typically available in different colors, so clear is just the acrylic powder itself, and then you have your sheer colors, cover colors, color powders and also glitter powders.

Clear is used for almost every single set and it’s going to have the strongest adhesion.

Now that you know what acrylic is, let’s go over what kind of products you are going to need to get started.

You don’t need a lot to get started with acrylic but there are a few key products.

First you will need your acrylic powder, monomer which will react with the powder and a acrylic brush of the size between 12 and 14. and then you will need a dehydrator a primer.

If you are looking to do a nail extension you will need nail tips and nail glue. And of course a nail file and a top coat.

So how to choose these products?

• When you are choosing a monomer there are some things that you want to avoid. First, never use a monomer that includes either mma or hema. These ingredients have been banned by the FDA for causing irritation burning and damage to the nail bed. Second, always use a monomer that has a purple tint, because if you use a clear monomer it will work perfectly fine to build your nail, but you are going to get that yellowing on the nail.

• When choosing a acrylic powder, make sure that the powders are highly pigmented acrylic powder and have even color coverage.Good acrylic powders will be really smooth and buttery instead of chalky and crumbly.

The application

1: Push back the cuticles

2: File the nail surface

3: Choose a nail tip that fit, and glue it to the nail. Once it’s applied, trim and shape them well.

4: Apply dehydrator only to the natural nail bed. After it’s dried, apply primer also only to the natural nail.

5: Before applying any color to the nail bed, apply a thin layer of clear powder. It helps make your nails stronger.

6: Start about a hairline away from the cuticle and use the body of your brush to work the bead down to the free edge. When it’s done, let it dry for a few minutes.

7: Use a file to clean up the shape, and sharpen those edges.

Then buff away any imperfections

8: The final step, apply top coat, and cure it.

Notes:

1: Make sure that your monomer stays clean throughout the process. If it starts to get a little bit thick gummy or cloudy, It’s time to change it.

2: The liquid to monomer ratio

If you have too much monomer on your brush you will have a really runny and watery bead. And It’s not going to build any structure. If you don’t get enough monomer on your brush your bead will be too dry, and the powder will stuck to the brush.

The key is that you have to keep practicing and just feel it out.

What is reinforced gel polish？

Reinforced gel polish, also known as hardener ,as the name implies, is a kind of UV gel that increases the firmness. But this is just a simple literal understanding, hardener's function and use can be more than you think.

The right steps are: 

first apply a base coat, then apply the reinforced gel polish on top of the base coat, and finally apply the color gel.

After applying the color gel, you can apply another layer of reinforced gel polish, which should not be cured, so you can fix some small decorations on the undried reinforced gel polish.

After adding some small decorations, the nail surface will be uneven, so you can choose to use a thinner reinforced gel polish to make the whole surface smoother. A less thick reinforced gel polish will have a good flow, so it will also lighten the brush marks left on the nail surface during the application of the color gel.

What kind of builder gel is suitable for your nails?

First, when you have curved nails, and your nail surface is relatively flat Then you only need to use hardener.

Hardener has a medium consistency, so it is suitable for micro-construction

Apply a thin layer without curing it under the light.

Then take the gel and brush it back and forth in the middle of the nail surface until it is flat.

Turn the nail upside down and shape it

Three seconds or so, and then cure it immediately. Compared to the natural nail and the build up nail, it is much fuller

Use a builder gel to build up your nails.

Take a small amount of gel for the first time

apply thinly without curing

Take a large bead of gel for the second time

Push it out with light circular motion

Let the gel flow smoothly by itself

Note that the pen should not leave the gel

Thin all around, thick in the middle,  avoid touching the skin

Then turn it upside down and use the pen to paint up and down in the middle

Now let’s talk about what Hema is and why Hema could potentially cause problems

Hema, it’s chemical name is 2-Hydroxyethyl methacrylate

• So is Hema a necessary component in gels?

Actually Hema is added because it gives us really good adhesion of the natural nail.

Natural nails are made of keratin and keratin protein likes that are carboxylic acids and Hema is sort of a long-chain carboxylic acid with a hydroxyl group on one end.

The OH group on the Hema allows it to be more miscible with water so if you have water on you fingernails, so it doesn’t reject the Hema. Hema is also really good as its seen it only has one functional reactive site for the UV cured systems or acrylic systems. So because it only has one of those carbon-carbon double bonds on one end that’s the methacrylate, because it only has one of those it only can enter into one portion of a die functional reaction. So it becomes a chain terminator. If chains could get too long they can become too rigid or they can become too brittle or just not good adhesion.

So, Hema isn’t inherently a bad thing because it creates great adhesion to the natural nail plate, it could bonds with that. But one of the downsides of Hema is that it can get out of control if it’s not bound within the formula properly, or if you get it on your skin, and when you are applying things that contain monomeric Hema you want to make sure that you avoid skin contact. And that’s why as you may have see on pretty much every label for nail care products says “avoid skin contact”

• But there are ways that we can make formulas even safer than having Hema added. 

And so if you see Hema on the ingredient list that’s not necessarily a bad thing, but question might come up what’s the concentration of Hema in a systerm. If the product has 40 percent concentration of Hema in a gel polish system, that increases the chance of becoming allergic to the Hema. There is other molecules that we can use that also have good reactions and good adhesion in a natural nail.Take Hema’s sibling HPMA Hydroxypropyl methacrylate has one additional carbon atom in the backbone and that Hydroxypropyl methacrylate is less allergenic. So some products wind up taking something that has 50％ Hema to 25％Hema and 25％HPMA. And there’s other monomers can be added in there as well.

What’s the best solution?

The answer is “oligomers”. So how it compares to a monomer? 

Oligomer is typically molecule has been built based on the backbone of one of the resins so it’s basically Hema but attached to the Oligomer chain.  And oligomer is ten times the size of Hema monomer. As a result, It’s less likely to enter you bloodstream if it comes in contact with your skin, which makes it safer.

So why companies choose to put so much monomer instead of choosing to put more oligomers in their product?

The answer is very simple. Because Hema is very cheap, so with more Hema, the price will be cheaper. Because it reduces the raw material cost. Oligomers on the other hand are mega expensive. Compared to Hema the oligomers are about 10 times the cost.

After the time is up, use a steel pusher to remove the residue. Remember, if there is still a large area of un-softened gel residue, do not use tools to push, you should continue to wrap it with the nail removal pack and wait for a period of time to remove it again.

4. builder gel removal

Builder gel nail is the hardest and most difficult type of nail product to remove. If you use the incorrect method or forcefully peel it off, you will cause very serious damage to your own nails and a large area of damage overall. The correct way is to cut it short with a nail clipper first and use a sander to thin the gel as well. (Note: If you still need to do the extensions, you don't need to remove all the gel, just cover it and recreate it.) 5. Acrylic powder nail removal

Due to the different material of Acrylic powder, the speed of fusion with nail removal pack is faster than builder gel. If there is any residue left after a light push with a steel pusher, just use a sponge to polish it untill it' s clean.
